Windows Intune Release

The importance of our computers running smoothly and efficiently is at the top of the list for every business.  Employees expect their PCs to work efficiently, whether they’re in the office or on the road, so they have the tools they need to get their jobs done. They need access to their information and resources regardless of where they’re working. They want to use their computers for both work and personal use. At the same time, businesses need to ensure that PCs are highly secure and well-managed to help protect corporate data and assets, reduce support calls and streamline the cost of delivering routine management and security.

Windows Intune brings together Windows cloud services and a Windows 7 Enterprise subscription to help businesses simplify PC management and security, all while getting the benefits of a modern operating system. At Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in July, we announced the beta for the next release of Windows Intune. Today we are excited to share with you that our next release of Windows Intune, which includes the new features and updates of the July 2011 beta, will be available on October 17 of this year!

Passwords!

On average most people type eight passwords a day and have 25 accounts that require passwords.  That estimate is fairly low considering that it came from a study taken by Microsoft in 2007.    People are becoming frustrated with attempting to remember all the passwords so they use weak or the similar password over and over.   This in turn makes you vulnerable to identity theft.   Numerous Password Management programs are available to assist you in protecting yourself.

KeyPass is an open source password management program.  It is a Windows program but has versions that are compatible with OS-X and Linux.    http://keepass.info/

RoboForm is a desktop application and toolbar for Windows only.  It has a free trial option, which is limited and a shareware version.         http://www.roboform.com/

LastPass works with Windows/Mac/Linux is stores all your passwords under a master password and is supposed to work with just a click of your mouse.   https://lastpass.com/

These are just three examples and numerous others are available just make sure you do your research before you decide which program to use.

Overheating Laptop!

Overheating of laptops is a common occurrence and if not dealt with could lead to permanent damage to your system.  When your system overheats you could lose data, blue screens, or worse yet a fired hard drive.  Some systems are built with automatic shut off features to where if your core system reaches a specific temperature it will shut your system down.  If you notice your fan is constantly running, the bottom of your notebook is warm to the touch or your system is slower or just shuts down several steps can be taken to make sure your system is getting airflow it needs to keep the temperature down.

-Check your vents located on the bottom and/or the side of your laptop.  The vents can get clogged with lent which can lead to improper air flow.

-If you feel comfortable enough open your system and clean it with a can of air, everywhere you see lent and other debris.

-Purchase a standalone cooling fan/pad for your laptop.  You can purchase a good one for under twenty dollars.

-Don’t sit your laptop on carpet when using it, the carpet will complete shut off all airflow.

-Several apps are available (freeware) which monitor your systems temperature.

Taking these simple steps will ensure your system is running at the proper temperature and it will allow your system to perform at its maximum potential.

Windows XP Re-installs

I know a lot of people use the most up-to-date OS like Windows 7 but in my profession I have still seen a lot of machines running Windows XP.

If your XP system becomes corrupt or crashes on you, make sure that when you re-install or repair, you run your Windows Update. Windows XP Software does not come equipped with a lot of the drivers that you will need for it to work properly.  They must be downloaded separately.

You can find windows update in your Control Panel under Security and click Automatic Updates or you may go to www.update.microsoft.com

If your Windows XP does not have Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 be sure to install this as well.  To find out what Service Pack your system has, you need to right click on your My Computer and click on Properties. You will see what kind of operating system you have and it will also show if you do or do not have service pack.

Memory Check!

Is your computer system running slow if so increasing your random-access memory (RAM) could help your system perform quicker.  Older systems that have low amounts of RAM, 2 GB, could see significant increase in performance by simply upgrading to 4 GB.  Upgrading the RAM is low in cost and for the average computer user a simple fix, instead of purchasing a new system.

See your system manufacturers  website to see the type of RAM your system accepts.  For example, PC2100 DDR 133 MHz RAM means PC2100 is the type, DDR is the category, and 133 MHz is the speed in megahertz.

If you feel reluctant to open the system bring it to a repair shop, it’s a quick fix and most shops will replace your RAM while you wait.

Computer Boots Slow

Stopping or minimize the number of  start-up programs could assist your system in booting (start-up) quicker.  Below is a reference for Windows 7.

1.  In the Windows Start button type in “msconfig”

2. In the new window that opens go to the tab-Start-up

3. Then simply select the programs that you don’t wish to automatically start-up when you boot your system.   The best practice is to cancel start-up programs that you don’t use on a normal basis, such as a secondary printers that you don’t use on a regularly.   Anti-Virus programs should be left alone to ensure that your system is protected from the time you boot your system until you shut it down.

For any questions or details on how to close start-up programs on other operating systems give us a call at 757-395-4444 or leave us a post at:

What is an OSI Model?

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a product of the Open Systems Interconnection effort at the International Organization for Standardization. It is a prescription of characterizing and standardizing the functions of a communications system in terms of abstraction layers. Similar communication functions are grouped into logical layers. A layer serves the layer above it and is served by the layer below it.

For example, a layer that provides error-free communications across a network provides the path needed by applications above it, while it calls the next lower layer to send and receive packets that make up the contents of that path. Two instances at one layer are connected by a horizontal connection on that layer.

The OSI is made up of 7 layers and they are as follows:

Layer 7- Application Layer

-Defines interface to user processes for communication and data transfer in network.  It provides standardized services such as virtual terminal, file and job transfer, and operations.

Layer 6-Presentation Layer

  • Masks the differences of data formats between dissimilar systems
  • Specifies architecture- independent data transfer format
  • encodes and decodes data; encrypts and decrypts data; compresses and decompresses data

Layer 5-Session Layer

  • Manages user sessions and dialogues
  • Controls establishment and termination of logic links between users
  • Reports upper layer errors

Layer 4-Transport Layer

  • Manages end to end message delivery in network
  • Provides reliable and sequential packet delivery through error recovery and flow control mechanisms
  • Provides connectionless oriented packet delivery

Layer 3-Network Layer

  • Determines how data are transferred between network devices.
  • Routes packets to unique network device addresses.
  • Provides flow and congestion control to prevent network resource depletion.

Layer 2-Datalink Layer

  • Defines procedures for operating the communications links.
  • Frames packets
  • Detects and corrects packets transmit errors

Layer 1-Physical Layer

  • Defines physical means of sending data over network devices.
  • Interfaces between network medium and devices.
  • Defines optical, electrical, and mechanical characteristics

Differences Between C and C++

I learned how to code in C++ my first year of college, because I was told that C was in the process of being phased out, as it did not allow for proper procederal outcome.

Here are the differences…

  1. C is single-paradigm procederal while C++ is multi-paradigm procederal
  2. Data is not secured in C, but is in C++
  3. C is low level, while C++ is middle level
  4. C is top down, while C++ is bottom up
  5. C is driven by functions, C++ is object driven
  6. C++ allows for function overloading
  7. We can nest functions in C++, but cannot in C
  8. Input & output functions differs
C uses scanf and printf while C++ uses cin>> and cout<<
  9. NAMESPACE is introduced in C++, not present in C
  10. Reference variables can be utilized in C++, not in C
