Computer Shuts Down Automatically Without Warning

I’m sure everyone has run into this at one point or another….I know I have.

When playing games, your computer cpu is used much more, the graphics cards are used much more, they create more heat. Some laptops and (indeed computers) can overheat.

There is a failsafe.  If a computer gets over the pre-configured temperature, the computer restarts or shuts down.  This is to avoid your cpu being damaged.
You can check if this is happening to you by downloading “coreTemp”:
32Bit Windows http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/CoreTemp32.zip

64Bit Windows http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/CoreTemp64.zip
If the temperature is 90 degrees during your gameplay or infact if it is around 75 degrees whilst just using your computer.. This is probably the issue you are coming across.

For Laptops the solution is:   Buy a cooler for your laptop
Desktop Computer Solution:   Replace your Heat Sink and add more fans to your computer. Probably best to take to a computer repair (Like All Compute LLC) if you have no idea how.  It is relatively simple, however sometimes you need to remove the whole motherboard to place the grip on heatsinks.

Let me know if you have any questions and/or need repair on this or anything computers!!  Happy gaming!!!

Downloading Windows 8 (Beta) on a VMWare Player

Hello everyone,

Windows 8 (Beta) recently came out and it’s popular to test so if you don’t have a dedicated PC on which to install Windows. No problem. Just install the OS virtually on an existing PC using a free virtual machine utility.  I suggest using a product such as VMWare Player or Oracle Virtualbox.  They are both free and both support Windows 8.

To get started you need to download Windows 8 Beta Consumer Preview as an ISO file.

You can download Windows 8 from here. After selecting the Visit site button, click the button to Get it Now and then choose the option to “download Windows 8 Consumer Preview in ISO format instead.” You can download the ISO file as either a 32-bit or 64-bit version. Both VirtualBox and VMWare Player support 64-bit Windows as a guest. Note the Windows 8 serial number as well.

Download VMWare Player from here. Register at the VMWare Web site to get the software and choose the link for VMware Player for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. After installing the downloaded file, you’ll need to reboot your PC.

After your computer is back up, open the VMWare folder from the Start Menu Programs area and select the shortcut for VMWare Player.

In the VMWare Player software, click the option to Create a New Virtual Machine. But don’t choose the option to install from the ISO file at this point, otherwise you’ll receive an error when VMWare tries to set up Windows 8. Instead, select the option “I will install the operating system later” and click Next.

Choose Other as the guest operating system and Other as the version. Click Next. Name the virtual machine Windows 8. Click Next. Keep the maximum size at 60 GB but choose the option to store the virtual disk as a single file for the best performance. Click Next and then Finish.

You should now see Windows 8 listed as a new virtual machine.

Click the option to Edit Virtual Machine Settings.  Under Hardware select CD/DVD as the device. Select the option to use ISO image and navigate to the ISO file for Windows 8. Click OK. Then select the option to Play virtual machine.

The Windows 8 installation will begin and you can set it up as you normally would.

Hope this helps.

How to Embed a Youtube Video into Powerpoint

When finding the video that you want to embed in your PowerPoint presentation, make sure you find the Embed code. Most of them look like this:

<object width=”560″ height=”315″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/r_bTn8mzz6s?version=3&amp;hl=en_US”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/r_bTn8mzz6s?version=3&amp;hl=en_US” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”560″ height=”315″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed></object>

Now, if you are on Windows 7, like I am, and using Microsoft Office 2010, this will be farely easy. All you have to do is access the ‘Insert’ tab and then go down to the ‘Media’ section, and you will see a ‘Video’ button. You then will have to choose, ‘Video from Website’. A dialog box will pop up, which is where you will insert the embed code of the video. And voila! The video will be right there on the slide for you manipulate as you please.

Slow Computer?

If your computer is running slow, the issue is that you might not have enough available RAM, or maybe too many startup programs. You might have too many temporary files on your computer, or you might have too many profiles logged on at the same time. The most common issue, and the dreaded issue that comes to everyone’s mind when they think of a slow computer, is the possibility of a virus. In most cases, a virus can be fixed by running a diagnostic on your antivirus package, and if the issue still persists, you might want to bring it in to a computer shop so that a professional can assess what is going on. In the case of too many startup programs, that is an easy fix.

Make sure you stay away from large programs, and by large I mean programs with large storage footprints, as these are the programs that might take a little longer to startup. Go to the ‘Start’ button, and type ‘msconfig’ in the search tab. A system configuration box will pop up, with a start up tab. Make sure that all of the programs that you want to open upon startup are checked, and the programs you no longer want to open are unchecked. Hit ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’, and your computer should be running faster in no time.

Microsoft Outlook Error Messages

While using Microsoft Outlook, have you ever received one of these error messages?:

  • No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
  • The server could not be found. (Account: account name, POPserver:’mail’, Error Number: 0x800ccc0d)
  • Task ‘server name – Sending and Receiving’ reported error (0x800ccc0f): ‘The connection to the server was interrupted. If this continues, contact the server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: ? K’
  • Your server has unexpectedly terminated the conection. Possible causes of this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account. account name, Server: ‘server name‘, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘+OK’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800ccc0f
  • Task ‘SMTP server name - Sending and Receiving’ reported error (0×80042109): ‘Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact the server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).’
  • The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server 0x8004210a
  • A time-out occurred while communicating with the server 0x800ccc19

or just an error code, that looks something like 0x800ccc15 or 0×80042108?

Well don’t be scared, you’re not the only one that has. This usually means that you are not connected to the Internet or your network, or that your mail server is down. It could also mean that your user profile on Outlook is damaged, which could be caused by incorrect configuration. There are a couple of resolutions to these issues.

Make sure you are connected to the Internet, make sure your account settings are correct and up to date, you could also start your Outlook in safe mode, create a new profile, and examine your firewall as well.

Laptop Batteries?

Three different types of laptop batteries:

Li-ion Lithium Ion is one of the newest battery types.  The upside to this battery is it has no “memory effect” and is lighter.  The downside is the price it is extremely expensive.

Ni-Cd Nickel Cadmium is one of the oldest batteries types.  The downfalls are it has a very high “memory effect” and is heavier than others.

NI-MH Nickel Metal Hydride replaced Ni-Cd batteries and has 30% more capacity than Ni-Cd but is the same size.  Also has less “memory effect”.

Save Your Battery!

Several steps you can take to ensure that you get the best possible results from your Laptop battery.

Defrag your system regularly, about once every couple of months.  The faster your hard-drive works the less strain on your battery.

External Devices-USB Drives for your mouse and keyboard also drain your battery.  The more external devices your Laptop has to communicate with the more power it’s going to use.  This includes WiFi, if you’re not using it shut it down.

Battery Contacts- The metal contacts on your battery should be cleaned every couple of weeks to ensure you have the best possible connection.

Hibernate-When not using your Laptop place it in Hibernate not Standby.  Hibernate shuts the system down but leaves the system were you left off.  Stand by does the same but doesn’t complete shut your system down so it is still draining power.

Cut down on programs running in the background while utilizing your battery.  The more programs running the more battery power needed.

Prevent “Memory Effect” every couple of weeks allow your battery to fully discharge and then allow it to fully charge.  Of Course, user of Li-Ion batteries can disregard this step.

Dim your screen.  Some laptops screens can be dimmed easily, on your keyboard.  You would be surprised how much dimming your screen can save your battery.

Battery Life!

Most laptop batteries last anywhere from 1 ½ to 3 years, using the simple steps above will help your battery last longer.
